1 potato, 2 potato, 3 potato more…..

Back when it was still cold and damp (it’s been beautiful summer weather for at least a week!) we planted this years potato crop. The children helped set the potatoes out for chitting and watched as they appeared to shrivel and then, slowly the roots started coming. We then transferred the seed potatoes to our special potato sacks on the front drive. A good spot for sun and shade depending on the time of day and inclination of the weather!

Then we waited.

and waited.

and waited. Very much in manner of Jasper and his bean stalk. Eventually there were green leaves and plants and it was all exciting again for a bit and then back to waiting. That is waiting until today.

Today we harvested the potatoes. It was fab fun. Using hands, spades, a trowel and all our strength we pulled up the plants and underneath were lots and lots and lots of potatoes.

Pulling them up was fun but washing them was ‘epic’ and ‘awesome’ and ‘the most fun ever!’

Tonight we cooked them for tea and they were really good.

This is an activity we do each year with our free potato supplies from the School Potato Council. Easy to do and well worth it.
